With a diverse coastline of massive rock promontories, billion-year-old volcanoes, Caribbean-like white sand beaches and cobblestone terraces, Lake Superior is the planet's largest expanse of freshwater and among Canada's ultimate sea kayaking destinations.

Our lodge and paddling centre specialize in sea kayaking Canada’s Lake Superior coast. Choose from four scheduled sea kayak programs ranging from weekend getaways for beginner paddlers to 14-day expeditions for the more experienced. You can also schedule your own dates and destinations with a custom trip.

When choosing a trip, consider your skill level, schedule and what Superior experience interests you most. Fully outfitted trips include meals and all the paddling and camping gear you need—all that your required to provide is a sleeping bag and personal clothing.

Our sea kayak trips typically begin with an on-water group skills workshop in the warmer waters of the Michipicoten River, followed by a fresh fish barbecue and trip orientation from Rock Island Lodge, our base on Lake Superior, near Wawa, Ontario. Your guides are trained and knowledgeable outdoor professionals and certified sea kayak instructors and guides, first-rate wilderness chefs and committed to putting safety first.

Lodge-based Trips : Sea kayak day trips and instruction from our Paddling Centre at Rock Island Lodge on Lake Superior.

Weekend Getaways : Perfect for the first-time sea kayaker or experienced paddler looking for a weekend sea kayak vacation. Trips begin with a half-day of instruction before spending the weekend paddling the northernmost part of Lake Superior Provincial Park. Our long weekend family vacation is perfect for children and adventure-loving parents. All-inclusive full outfitting.

Weekly Escapes : These five-day trips are well suited to first-time, novice or more experienced paddlers looking for a longer Lake Superior experience. We offer three variations including multi-sport paddling and hiking trips. Trips begin with a half-day of instruction. All-inclusive full outfitting.

Wilderness Trips : Seven-day sea kayak trips to some of Lake Superior's finest destinations. These trips are best suited to intermediate paddlers with some wilderness camping experience. Most of our wilderness trips begin with a half-day skills and rescues workshop. We welcome novice paddlers on wilderness trips but recommend they paddle stable and efficient double kayaks. Partial outfitting: Meals, group gear and guide are included, supply your own sea kayak and tent (or rent from us at reduced rates).

"The Big One" : Paddle the entire (or just a part of it) north shore of Lake Superior in this summer long, section-by-section expedition from Pigeon River to Sault Ste. Marie.

Custom Trips : If the dates for one of our scheduled trips don't work for you or if you have some ideas of your own, let us know and we'll work together on designing your own custom sea kayak trip on Lake Superior.

  • Novice skill level: Participants may have some paddling skills or have good complimentary skills in another outdoor activity. Daily paddling distances range from seven to 15 kilometres.

  • Intermediate skill level: Participants have good paddling skills and some experience in outdoor camping. Daily paddling distances range from 12 to 25 kilometres.

  • Naturally Superior Adventures’ Guides: Your guides are qualified, personable and knowledgeable outdoor professionals whose first priority is ensuring your safety and enjoyment. They hold certifications in leadership, wilderness first aid and sea kayaking; all are familiar with the heritage, ecology and environment of our area. Guides will make a special effort to share their knowledge and assist you with paddling skills to help ensure an enjoyable and educational trip. Trips have a maximum of 10 guests with two guides. Most of our paddling is done in single kayaks, but usually we send at least one tandem kayak on each trip and is an option for anyone who would like to paddle with a partner.

  • Your Group: Groups sizes are normally limited to 10 guests; we average four to six guests on each trip. Paddlers are adventurous adults over 16 years in age; singles and couples, typically ranging between 25 and 65 years in age.

  • Trip Cuisine: Our menu contains healthy, tasty, non-processed foods in hearty supply. We try to incorporate organic ingredients whenever possible. Our menu reflects the diversity of Canada and includes traditional recipes and ethnic favourites. While our regular menu includes meat, fish and a variety of fresh foods, we often accommodate vegetarians and will work to accommodate those with special dietary requirements. Due to the wilderness nature of our trips, we do not recommend participation by those with severe food or environmental allergies. Call to discuss any specific needs you may have.

  • Paddling Safety: Lake Superior is generally calm in the summer months, but when it gets rough we enjoy the view from shore. Experience paddling in surf and large swells is not necessary. Safety is our primary goal, and we welcome guests to voice their concerns at any time.

  • Camping and Daily Routine: We usually start fairly early in the morning to catch Superior at it’s calmest. We then take our time exploring the rugged coastline. We tend to spend most of the day on the water, taking a lunch break and several snack breaks along the way. Long summer days leave plenty of time for checking out interesting sections of beach, exploring the forest or napping on a sun soaked rock. By mid to late afternoon we make camp, allowing lots of time for evening activities and a delicious meal.

  • Weather: It is generally warm and sunny in mid-summer with temperatures in the 20°C range. Summertime weather on Lake Superior includes the odd rainy or foggy day. On average, one day in five is too rough to paddle. Nights can be cool, periodically dipping down to 2° to 5°C. Dress in layers, bring good rain gear and warm clothing. The Gales of November was a wonderful photographic retreat. Naturally Superior, indeed! It seemed like a long journey to this awesome destination but I was definitely not disappointed in the splendour it offered.
