Employment with Naturally Superior Adventures Paddling Centre and Rock Island Lodge
We want great people to help us to be Lake Superior’s best eco-adventure company. We offer regular and short-term employment and volunteer opportunities. We are most active from mid-May to September, although activity begins in April and extends through mid-November.
We offer a great location on Lake Superior at the mouth of the Michipicoten River, about a 15-minute drive south of Wawa, Ontario, on Highway 17. You will be working with about 15 co-workers. Most of our staff members live on our seven-acre site while some live in Wawa. Most of our staff has some form of outdoor education training and experience.
The general qualities we look for in staff:
- Training and experience relevant to the position.
- An emphasis on safety and a good service mentality.
- Ability to take initiative and work or lead in an unsupervised environment.
- Understanding and interest in eco-tourism themes such as local heritage, ecology and environment.
- Good sense of humour and creativity.
We are unable to hire those who smoke or are very allergic to dogs.
Accommodations and Meals:
For all positions we provide a tent platform and meals. Most summer staff members live on site in tents and enjoy a staff shower and communal “hang-out.” Staff members have full use of Naturally Superior Adventures’ boats and facilities. Sea kayak tours and kayak surfing are typical after work activities. Staff members are usually responsible for preparing their own breakfast in the staff house; lunch and dinner are served in the lodge. All staff members are expected to contribute towards maintaining a clean lodge and site.
For newer staff, summer is divided into two parts:
The spring experience portion begins when you arrive and ends in mid-June. It’s designed to help you become a great guide. We provide your meals and tent site and the daily minimum wage salary for every day you work. By mutual agreement, guide staff may participate in our training courses by paying for the full course price course and being paid the daily minimum wage salary while taking the course. Other, non-guide staff may participate in our training courses on their own time by paying 65 per cent of the course cost under a mutual agreement. Our usual schedule of training programs includes:
-
Wilderness Medical Associates Advanced Wilderness First Aid (every 2 years).
-
Paddle Canada sea kayak skills and instructor-level certifications from beginner to advanced
-
Moving water tandem canoe skills: ORCA Moving Water 1 equivalency
-
AECSKO Lake Superior sea kayak guides’ course
All staff members are welcome to participate in staff activities and trips in their free and unpaid time simply by sharing the cost of the activity. We participate in a number of sea kayak symposiums during spring, including the Inland Sea kayak Symposium near the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. While we primarily work as volunteers at these events, our expenses are often covered by the event sponsors.
The summer period begins in mid-June and ends in early September. You are expected to work for approximately 11 weeks. You will be paid the summer salary biweekly; depending on your job, hours may vary significantly from week to week. We are sometimes able to accommodate students and others job candidates who will have to start later in the spring or depart prior to September. But if you want to guide for Naturally Superior Adventures, you must have the minimum safety and skill qualifications.
Applications:
We generally give our returning staff until the end of January each year to make their summer plans known. Therefore, the best time to send your application is from mid-January onwards.
