This five day course is a significant step on your path to sea kayak Instructor mastery. The program is a mix of demonstrations skill development, theory and practical skill teaching practice, and an overnight or two camping trip including group instruction scenarios, student evaluation, feedback and appropriate course leadership, risk management and decision making.
The course is part of a unique Paddle Canada (PC), American Canoe Association (ACA) and British Canoe Union (BCU) sea kayak coaches training week and Gales Storm Gathering Symposium (www.galesstormgathering.com) we’re doing in partnership with the Geneva Kayak Center. We’ll be hosting intermediate/advanced level instructor courses with senior level instructors from each discipline and you’ll have an opportunity to interact with instructors and students from each program.
Whether you are seeking Paddle Canada Certification and/or for personal development, it will be a challenging and rewarding experience. Our objective is to help you become a great level 2 sea kayak instructor by focusing participants on the following themes:
As a successful candidate you’ll be certified to run Paddle Canada Introduction to Kayaking, Level-1 and Level 2 sea kayak skills courses; to assist Level 3 Instructor and skills courses; and assist on level 1 Instructor Trainer and Instructor courses.
Course Work: Participants are expected to complete pre-course work including Level 2 program topic presentations and a hand out exam. Also submission of a detailed course outline is requisite to successful course completion. Candidates are expected to be familiar with the Paddle Canada level 1 Instructor materials.
Course Evaluation: Candidates will be evaluated on their skills, behaviour and general attitude; by written test; and by a minimum of two demonstrations of teaching at the appropriate level (on water and theory).If certification is not important to you, great. This Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak Instructor Course is a 4-day coverage of the demonstration quality paddling skills, appropriate teaching techniques and administration required to deliver a high quality Level 1 sea kayak skills course.
This course is run concurrently with our Paddle Canada Intro to Kayaking Instructor course. However it runs a day longer and is significantly more comprehensive.
Course Content
This course will cover three main areas:
The course is based from Naturally Superior Adventures/Rock Island Lodge and all meals and theory sessions are provided from the comfort of the lodge. Course accommodations are comfy tent sites on our beach or alternatively, rooms are available (at an additional cost) at Rock Island Lodge. Fully equipped sea kayaks, paddling tops and wetsuits are provided as part of the course as is a detailed Instructor’s manual. The course fee also provides for Paddle Canada certification.
Teaching and Evaluation: Candidates will demonstrate a knowledge of the following topics as it applies to teaching kayaking: How one learns; conditions of learning; skill, knowledge and attitude areas of learning; goals and objectives; teaching strategies; lesson planning and organization; class management; group dynamics; evaluation techniques; instructor behavior and attitudes; and planning and organizing a Paddle Canada sea kayaking course.
Programming and Program Development: Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of the following as they relate to a recreational kayak program in Canada: Paddle Canada policies; certification guidelines; organization and management of certified courses; legal and liability issues for an instructor; safety procedures, regulations; equipment choice; teaching sites; scheduling; teaching progressions; kayaking games and activities; and staff management.
Course Evaluation and Certification: Candidates will be evaluated on their skills, behaviour and general attitude; by written test; and by a minimum of two demonstrations (theory and on water) of teaching at the Intro to Kayaking Instructor level. To complete the course candidate instructors are required to prepare and submit a Paddle Canada Intro to Kayaking course outline.
