Sea kayak to Lake Superior’s largest collection of First Nations pictographs and experience the myth and magic the north shore on this five-day fully guided wilderness paddling trip.

Tracing most of Lake Superior Provincial Park coastline, this trip is for more ambitious paddlers. The route features spectacularly diverse geology—including granite and volcanic formations—and the opportunity to see woodland caribou in their southernmost habitat. The entire route is a sea kayaker’s dream of sand and cobblestone beaches and steep, rocky headlands, including the 200-metre-tall Old Woman Bay cliffs. On our way we’ll pay homage to Mishepeshu, the Ojibwa spirit of Superior, and visit several significant First Nation cultural sites.

Your trip begins on Sunday afternoon with a half-day group safety and paddling skills workshop at our Rock Island Lodge and Lake Superior Paddling Centre. We end the day with a fresh whitefish dinner. Advanced reservations are required if you’d like to spend Sunday night in our Rock Island Lodge, however we reserve a number of campsites for trip participants on our sandy lakeside beach. On Monday morning, we set off on the crystal clear water of the largest lake in the world.

This trip is designed for novice through to intermediate paddlers. While no previous sea kayaking experience is needed, your enjoyment will be enhanced if you are in good physical condition and comfortable with backcountry camping. The group sets our pace, but we tend to spend most of the day on the water at a relaxed pace, leaving lots of time for covering the distance and exploring the coast. The lake is mostly calm in summer, but when it gets rough we enjoy the view from shore, so experience paddling in surf and swells is not necessary.

You will be responsible for carrying a portion of the group gear, as well as your tent, sleeping bag and personal gear, in your kayak. Once we've reached the group campsite for the evening, our experienced guides can assist you with setting up your tent. Then explore some more by foot or kayak, enjoy the afternoon sun in the company of a good book, or chat with the new friends you've made on the trip.

Your guides are certified in advanced wilderness first aid, sea kayaking skills and leadership. They know and love Lake Superior and want to share their knowledge with you. Your safety is their primary concern. They are also wonderful wilderness chefs and "on trip" meals are healthy, fresh and delicious. No freeze-dried food here! We can also accommodate most special diets.

On this trip we endeavour to use singles and at least one double sea kayak. You may be asked on trip to paddle in a double or share some paddling time in one. Because they are longer and wider, doubles are more stable and faster, making them excellent for those who wish to take photographs or who feel a bit physically challenged on a particular day.

Tents are provided for the weekend and beach tent sites and yurts are available pre- and post-trip as well. You might prefer to book a night in our Rock Island Lodge which features four comfortable rooms with private washrooms. Trip participants enjoy a discount on lodge accommodations and on merchandise in our paddling shop. Advance reservations for Rock Island Lodge are usually required.
