Ride the Algoma Central Railway to explore the Agawa Canyon on this all-inclusive four-day wilderness adventure. This base camp trip includes hiking in the Agawa Canyon, canoeing on the Agawa River and relaxing beneath the 200-metre cliffs of one of Ontario’s deepest river valleys.

The scenery of the Agawa Canyon is some of the most spectacular in Canada. Steep hillsides covered in a mixture of hardwood and softwood tree species—including rare old growth white pine and yellow birch—rise from the banks of the Agawa River. The canyon environment is a photographer’s dream with its muted light, rich colours and shapely landforms. For families, this adventure offers something for everyone at a relaxed pace. There are easy to moderate hikes on developed trails, and quiet water canoeing and excellent swimming on the Agawa River. In mid-August, the first blush of autumn appears in the leaves and longer nights make for spectacular stargazing. Your experienced guide(s) provide insight to the area’s natural and human history, as well as preparing delicious meals and ensuring group comfort and safety.

Our adventure begins on Thursday morning, when we will meet at Naturally Superior Adventures’ Rock Island Lodge and shuttle by vehicle to the Algoma Central Railway station at Hawk Junction. After a two-hour wilderness rail journey, we arrive in the canyon and set up a comfortable base camp on the shore of the Agawa River. We spend all day Friday and Saturday exploring the canyon by foot and canoe, and on Sunday prepare to be picked up by the Algoma Central Railway and return to Hawk Junction by early afternoon.

On this unique adventure you will be immersed in the wild grandeur of Algoma’s Agawa Canyon. Feel your stress evaporate as you fall into canyon time.
