The Agawa Canyon is a world famous destination for its spectacular fall colours. Experience fall first hand with this all-inclusive guided hike in the Agawa Canyon. The experience includes a wilderness train ride on the Algoma Central Railway, vibrant fall colours, a 13-kilometre-long hike and one night camping alongside the scenic Agawa River.

This trip is suitable for hikers with a moderate fitness level. We meet at our lodge in Wawa, Ontario Friday night where we catch the Algoma Central Railway on Saturday morning. The train drops us off at the rim of the Agawa Canyon. After a steep descent into the river valley, we join Lake Superior Provincial Park’s Towab Trail near the thundering Agawa Falls. Here we will admire the spectacular 25-metre-high plume that flows through a forest of fire. From here the trail follows the steep canyon walls for 13 kilometres along the Agawa River's eastern shore.

We spend Saturday night camped alongside a braid of the Agawa River at the base of 100-metre-high canyon walls. Evening includes a gourmet wilderness meal and stargazing beneath the autumn night sky. After a good night's rest and a hot breakfast, we lace up and continue along the trail. Day two highlights include more spectacular vistas of the lower Agawa Canyon and lunch at Burnt Rock Pool, where the river exits the canyon. Thoughout this section bald eagles are frequently spotted soaring on the thermal columns along the Agawa Canyon walls. If we're lucky, we'll see one dive down to the river and snare a salmon or trout in their talons.

The final section passes through a the fall colours of a mixed maple, yellow birch and balsam fir forest, where we may see moose browsing on young growth. Our end point is near Lake Superior and the Trans Canada Highway. From here a shuttle vehicle will transport you along the scenic highway 17 corridor back to Wawa. If you are traveling back down to the south, we can arrange to have your vehicle brought to the take-out for an additional cost.
