Ride the Algoma Central Railway to explore the Agawa Canyon, Lake Superior and the best of what Algoma County has to offer on this all-inclusive six-day multi-sport adventure. This trip includes hiking in the Agawa Canyon, canoeing on the Agawa River and relaxing beneath the 200-metre cliffs of one of Ontario’s deepest river valleys, kayaking on Lake Superior, exploring Lake Superior Provincial Park and discovering the numerous waterfalls along the way. The perfect combination of part roughing-it in the wilderness coupled with the luxury of B&B style accommodations on the shore of Lake Superior; part active, wilderness activities joined with quality relaxing down-time make this adventure a must for anyone looking for a taste of Algoma country.

The scenery of the Agawa Canyon is some of the most spectacular in Canada. Steep hillsides covered in a mixture of hardwood and softwood tree species-including rare old growth white pine and yellow birch-rise from the banks of the Agawa River. The canyon environment is a photographer’s dream with its muted light, rich colours and shapely landforms. For families, this adventure offers something for everyone at a relaxed pace. There are easy to moderate hikes on developed trails, and quiet water canoeing and excellent swimming on the Agawa River. In mid-August, the first blush of autumn appears in the leaves and longer nights make for spectacular stargazing.

This adventure starts on the Friday in Sault Ste Marie. Our group will get together after dinner for introductions and to discuss trip logistics. The next morning we’ll board the Algoma Central Railway in downtown Sault Ste Marie. After a 4-hour wilderness journey we’ll disembark at the Agawa Canyon and set up a comfortable base-camp on the shore of the Agawa River. We spend all day Saturday and Sunday exploring the canyon by foot and by canoe and on Monday prepare to be picked up by the passenger train heading north to Hawk Junction.

Our NSA staff will be waiting for us at the station to bring us to our Lake Superior accommodation via the Silver Falls hiking trail. The next day enjoy a sea kayak day trip on Lake Superior’s Michipicoten Bay or if the lake is rough, Michipicoten River. After a second night in a Lake Superior B&B, we’ll hit the road and head south through Lake Superior Provincial Park territory, stopping off to hike a few of the local trails. This evening’s accommodation will be at the south end of Lake Superior Provincial Park, also on Lake Superior’s shores.

Our final day, we’ll visit the Agawa Pictographs and Interpretive Centre before traveling the 100km back to our originating location in Sault Ste Marie with a stop at Chippewa Falls along the way. Plan on arriving in the Soo by early to mid afternoon.

On this unique adventure you will be immersed in the wild grandeur of Algoma’s Wilderness.
